What TRON actually is

A blockchain best known for two things: moving enormous amounts of USDT, and charging fees in a way nobody understands until it is too late.

TRON is a public blockchain that launched in 2017 and spent its first few years being mostly famous for marketing. Then something genuinely useful happened to it: it became the cheapest practical place on earth to move Tether. Today a very large share of all USDT transfers happen on TRON, not because of any grand technical vision, but because sending a stablecoin there costs cents instead of dollars.

How blocks get made

TRON uses delegated proof of stake. Holders vote for 27 Super Representatives, and those 27 take turns producing blocks roughly every three seconds. It is fast, it is cheap, and it is considerably more centralised than the marketing implies. For your purposes as a user, the only consequence that matters is speed: your transaction confirms in seconds.

The part that costs you money

Here is where TRON gets weird. Most chains charge one fee, in the native coin, and everyone understands it. TRON instead has two resources, Bandwidth and Energy, that your account either has or does not have. If you have them, your transaction is effectively free. If you do not, the network takes TRX from your balance and destroys it.

This design means two people can send the identical transaction and one pays nothing while the other pays several TRX. The difference is not luck. It is whether they bothered to set up resources first. We explain both resources here.

Why your USDT transfer is the expensive one

Sending TRX is cheap because it is a simple transfer that only needs Bandwidth. Sending USDT is a smart contract call, and smart contract calls need Energy: a lot of it. A routine USDT transfer needs somewhere around 65 000 Energy. Sending to an address that has never held USDT before roughly doubles that, because the contract has to create a new storage slot for the recipient.

Accounts have to be born before they can be used

A TRON address does not exist on-chain until something is sent to it. That first incoming transfer costs the sender about 1.1 TRX to create the account. If you have ever sent to a fresh address and wondered why the fee was larger than usual, that is why. This is a one-time cost per address and there is nothing you can do to avoid it.

So what do you do about any of this?

You have three options, and only three. Burn TRX every time and accept the loss. Stake your own TRX to generate resources permanently. Or rent Energy for a few minutes at a time when you need it. Which one is right depends entirely on how much you transact, and you can find that out by running your own address through the analyzer.

Is TRON actually cheap?
For USDT transfers, yes. Dramatically cheaper than Ethereum mainnet. But only if you have set up resources. Without them you burn TRX on every single transaction, and that adds up to real money surprisingly fast.
Where does the burned TRX go?
Nowhere. It is destroyed and removed from the total supply. Nobody receives it.
Do I need TRX if I only hold USDT?
Yes. USDT on TRON cannot pay its own fees. You need TRX in the account, or staked resources, or a rental, before you can move a single dollar of it.
