How to get resources by staking
The permanent fix. Lock up TRX, get resources forever, wait two weeks if you change your mind.
Staking (the docs call it freezing) is TRON's built-in answer to fees. You lock TRX, and in exchange your account continuously generates Energy or Bandwidth. The TRX is not spent. It is not at risk. It is just immobilised until you ask for it back.
How it works in practice
- Open your wallet's resource or staking screen. Every major TRON wallet has one.
- Choose Energy or Bandwidth. This is the single most important decision, and most people get it wrong. See below.
- Enter an amount of TRX and confirm. Resources appear in your account within a block or two.
- Use your wallet normally. Your resources regenerate over roughly 24 hours after each use.
How much TRX do you actually need?
This is the honest, unsatisfying answer: it depends on the total amount staked network-wide, because resources are shared out proportionally. The ratio moves. As a rough order of magnitude, covering one USDT transfer per day has historically meant staking somewhere in the low thousands of TRX. Your wallet will show you the exact current conversion before you confirm. Trust that number, not a figure you read on a forum in 2022.
The catch: fourteen days
Unstaking is not instant. Under Stake 2.0 there is a 14-day waiting period between requesting your TRX back and being able to withdraw it. During that window it earns nothing and does nothing. If you might need that TRX liquid at short notice, staking is the wrong tool.
Delegation, and why rental services exist
Staked resources can be delegated to another address without moving the underlying TRX. Your stake stays yours; the Energy it produces goes to someone else, and can be reclaimed later. This single feature is the entire technical basis of the energy rental market: a big holder stakes once and rents out the resulting Energy in short bursts to people who need it. That is what renting actually is.
Staking also pays you
Staked TRX gives you TRON Power, which you can vote with, and voting earns a share of block rewards. It is not a large yield, but it is not nothing, and it makes the real cost of staking lower than the opportunity cost of the locked capital alone.
Stake or rent?
Stake if you transact predictably and often, and you are comfortable locking capital for at least two weeks. Rent if your usage is bursty, occasional, or you simply do not want thousands of TRX frozen. The full comparison is here, with the actual arithmetic.
And before you decide either way, check what you are currently burning. Everything above is theory until you see your own number.
FAQ
- Is staked TRX at risk?
- No. There is no slashing on TRON. The risk is liquidity, not loss: you cannot access the TRX for 14 days after you ask for it back.
- Can I stake for both Energy and Bandwidth?
- Yes, you split your stake between them. Most people should weight heavily toward Energy unless they only ever send plain TRX.
- How fast do resources regenerate?
- Consumed resources refill gradually over about 24 hours. Staking more raises your ceiling; it does not make the refill faster.
